In 1993, a small group of the larger independent coeducational day schools engaged Benchmark Research to design and coordinate a collaborative initiative (JRPO - Joint Research and Planning Office) serving shared research and planning needs at reasonable costs for participating schools. Since then, this consortium has grown to include 50 institutions while three other groups of independent schools have established and developed similar projects.

The INMAX Group, formed in 2002, is a consortium of independent schools sharing some or all of the following characteristics:
- Large enrollments (typically 1,000 - 5,000 students)
- Unusual missions and public/community interaction
- Unusual governance structures
- Large endowments
- Multiple campuses, complex physical facilities and real estate holdings
The INMAX mission is to support learning and leadership development for CEO’s and senior administrators in member schools.
The INMAX program includes:
- professional meetings at member schools, with participation by teams of senior
- administrators led by the President, School Head or CEO
- presentation and discussion of case studies from real school experiences
- extensive exposure to and interaction with management teams at member schools
- information exchange, via web-site and private “List Serve” e-mail discussion group,
- on organization, structure, policies, programs, initiatives
- research and analysis on topics of common concern
- periodic work with visiting experts
- collaborative program development (e.g. administrator exchanges, alumni surveys)
- comparative data analysis (e.g., trends in key indicators, financial equilibrium, etc.)
